8th place finish for Garrymore
02/12/20120 Comments

The 2012 season has finally come to a end but it wasn’t to finish on a winning note for the Garrymore senior team. Moy Davitts travelled to South Mayo in search for points to stay in division 1B for another season and they got the two points they deserved. The football didnt make for great viewing which was to be expected for this time of the year but Moy Davitts wont care as they got what they came for.

Moy Davitts got of to the better start picking up a lot of possession around the middle and making it count on the score board leading six points to two after 20 minutes of play. Garrymore missing a lot of regulars on the day struggled with the conditions and it wasn’t till just before half time Garrymore started to get a foothold in the game. Garry’ went in at half time trailing Moy Davitts 0-04 to 0-8, Garrymore’s points coming from Shane Nally 0-3 and Micheal Connolly 0-1.

The second half was better from a Garrymore view point as they had more of the possession but failed to convert it into scores. For long stretches Garrymore had the ball but lacked the cutting edge up front, a series of wides and poorly executed passes resulting in a defeat for Garrymore. The match wasn’t to go with incident as the Moy Davitts centre back recerived a red card for stricking Garrymore wing back Martin Jordan. Full time score from Garrymore, Garrymore 0-06 Moy Davitts 0-10. Elsewhere in the league Tourmakeady beat Ballyhaunis to take the second promotion spot and will play division 1A football next year with Claremorris.

Moy Davitts come to Garrymore Sunday
26/11/20120 Comments

Garrymore take on Moy Davitts in the final round of the senior league this weekend. Both sides are coming of the back of wins in round 10 but for Moy Davitts they need another win to guarantee safety. Garrymore on the other hand secured division 1B status last weekend with a 2-8 to 1-6 win over Aghamore. While the past number of weeks has being all about staying clear of the relegation zone for Garrymore, fortunes have changed and Garrymore have a very slight chance of promotion. The chance of promotion is very small, they would need a whole series of results to go their way, but its something to play for this Sunday.

Going back 10 months the two teams met in the league and it was the home side on that day Moy Davitts that came away with the victory. It was a must win for Garrymore then to gain promotion but the defeat hampered Garrymore’s run in and they eventually lost out to Davitts.

Moy Davitts could indeed survive without winning Sunday but they would need one of Swinford or Islandeady to lose. The game is due to throw in at 12Noon on Sunday along with the other 5 games in this final round. Its sure to say supporters will be keeping a ear out for results in other games as the day goes on.

Elsewhere in the league, Claremorris were announced champions last weekend with a one point victory over Kiltimagh, they will play their football in division 1A next year. Congratulations to Claremorris.

Garrymore secure division 1B status
25/11/20120 Comments

Garrymore secured their division 1B status this morning with a excellent 2-08 to 1-06 over Aghamore. The game was played in very challenging conditions with both sides having to put up with near freezing condition and the biggest object of all was the fog. It came in after five minutes of play and made it very difficult for football, at times you couldn’t see the opposite end of the field. Regardless of the conditions it was Garrymore who make the better start with two early goals. Anthony Cunningham first capitalising on an Aghamore mistake, he picked up on a poor kickout and crashed the ball high into the home sides net. Two minutes later it was Brian Walsh who found himself in behind the Aghamore defence and on the second occasion with the aid of the post gave Garrymore the best possible start with a second goal.

Garrymore continued to dominate possession around the middle and were rewarded with three points, two frees from Jimmy Killeen and one from corner forward Micheal Connolly. It wasn’t till the 18 minute Aghamore got their first score of the game, from a free. Further points were trade between the sides but it was Garrymore who went in at half time leading 2-05 to 0-03.

The second half was a much tighter affair with Aghamore starting the better. The East Mayo men got the first two scores of the game, leaving just the two goals between the sides for the remaining 25 minutes of the second half. To Garrymore’s credit they battled back and added scores of their own, two frees from Killeen and substitute Brian Lynskey adding one. With a lead to defend Garrymore brought men behind the ball and set out to defend their nine point lead. Despite leaking 1-2 in the final minutes the result was never in doubt as Garrymore always had bit more that the home side on the day. Final Score from Aghamore, Garrymore 2-08 Aghamore 1-06.

Seniors travel to Aghamore Sunday
19/11/20120 Comments

The end of the 2012 season is finally in sight. Garrymore have just two more games left in 2102 before they can put the boots away for another season. The games are Aghamore this Sunday @12 Noon and Moy Davitts the week after. There is no doubt that it has being a long season but it could be a even longer winter if Garrymore don’t secure two points between the two games. Back to back victories has put Garrymore in a good place to hold onto division 1B status but they are not completely safe, if results were to go their way, they could indeed get away without securing the two points to guarantee safety this weekend.

Aghamore are the opposition on Sunday and they will have different ideas than just showing up for the game. The East Mayo men are safe from relegation but if results were to go their way over the next two weekends they would be in with a shout of promotion. The two teams have already met this year in the championship and it was the home side on that day Garrymore who came away with the victory but just about. It was a game where the away side dominated possession but couldn’t convert it into scores.

It will be an interesting game on Sunday in Aghamore with two sides approaching the game with different mentalities, one holding their status and the other looking at promotion. The game is due to throw in at 12 Noon. Please Support.

Juniors announced Champions
11/11/20120 Comments

Congratulations to the Garrymore Junior team on winning the Division 1F league for 2012. After a county board meeting Thursday night Garrymore were announced champions. Due to the amount of games that were not played in division 1F it was decided that Garrymore and Kiltane would have to play off to see who wins the league. This decision was overturned at the meeting last Thursday and the head to head ruling would decide the winners resulting in Garrymore being announced as champions. Garrymore beat Kiltane by three points earlier in the year. They have also being promoted to 1E for next year. Well done lads on a undefeated season.

Seniors on the way up…
11/11/20120 Comments

Garrymore’s first half performance was enough to seal the two points this Sunday afternoon. Garrymore survived a Ballyhaunis come back late in the second half to pull themselves up the table and away from the relegation zone. All Garrymore’s hard work was done in the first half were they lead by seven points 1-07 to 0-03 at half time, The goal coming thanks to Micheal Connolly. Garrymore played with a lot of heart in the first half battling for every piece of possession and they were rewarded for the work they were putting in, enjoying long periods with the ball. The full back line of Jarlath Varley, Martin Maloney and Anthony Jordan were never really worked, dealing with every ball that came their way, that was also helped with Ballyhaunis dropping a man back in their own defence. The first half scores came courtesy of Jimmy Killeen (0-3,1 free), Enda Varley(0-3, 1 free) Shane Nally and Micheal Connolly’s goal.

It looked like Garrymore would continue were they left-off in the first half grabbing the first two points of the half Micheal Connolly first and then a excellent individual run and fisted point from Enda Varley. Ballyhaunis responded with a point before Varley again got another one for the home side. It was from this point Ballyhaunis woke up and started to play getting the last four points of the game but Garrymore hung on in there and did enough to hold onto the lead. Garrymore will be happy with the two points and their first half performance but in the second half they got caught a lot in possession leading to the Ballyhaunis scores. Final score from Garrymore, Garrymore 1-10 Ballyhaunis 0-09.

The win has resulted in Garrymore moving up to 6th in the table but not safe from relegation yet. They will need another two points to guarantee division 1B football next year.

Ballyhauins come to Garrymore Sunday
05/11/20121 Comment

Garrymore Seniors will welcome Ballyhaunis for the first time in the Senior league to Garrymore this Sunday morning. Garrymore coming of the back of a excellent win over Burrishoole will be looking to gather another two points on Sunday to lessen their relegation woes. As I mentioned both sides have not met much over the years and its sure to be a sense of the unknown Sunday. At Junior level both sides know each other very well meeting twice this year and on both occasions it was Garrymore’s good start that took them over the finish line. Ballyhaunis presently find themselves mid table with 7 points but not safe from relegation, they too will need points to remain in division 1B. The way the table lies and with teams taking points of each other no one is safe and it will be a battle to the end. Conditions on last Sunday are not set to improve as more rain is on the way, round 10 is set to be another mud bath like last week. Throw-in is at 12 Noon in Garrymore. Please Support

Seniors bounce back
04/11/20120 Comments

Garrymore seniors earned two points today after a well deserved four point win over Burrishoole. The game which was due to be played in Burrishoole was changed just one hour before the throw-in to Kilmeena, the Newport pitch was deemed unplayable by referee Malachy Mc Carron Garrymore got of to a excellent start with points from Jimmy Killeen and Micheal Connlly before Burrishoole responed with point from play. Burrishoole did line out thin on numbers missing most notable their County panellists Jason Doherty, but with the way Garrymore played he would of being starved of possession. Garry extended their lead out to five points thanks to Kieran Cunnningham, Brian Walsh and Killeen & Connolly again. At half time the South Mayo outfit lead 9 points to 5 but Jack Grimes wont be happy with Garrymore’s defending as four of Burrishoole’s five points came from frees. Garrymore’s other three points came from Killeen (free) Brian Walsh and Connolly. Garrymore started the second half like the first taking the first three scores of the game thanks to Connolly, Killeen and Brian Walsh again. Jack Grimes side looked very comfortable with Burrishoole putting up very little resistance. In fact if Killeen had is shooting boots on from the frees Garrymore could of being out of sight. Garrymore pulled men behind the ball for the remaining 10 minutes of the game making it hard for the Newport men to get through, with that Garrymore ran out 0-13 to 0-09 their last point coming from a Enda Varley free, the game wasnt to finish without inisidant as both Dara Henry and the Burrishoole corner forward received red cards. The performance was excellent from Garrymore responding to a very poor showing against Tourmakeady in the previous round, if they play like that in the remaining rounds they will have no problem staying in dividion 1B for next year.

Garry travel to Newport Sunday
29/10/20120 Comments

The league finally resumes for Garrymore this weekend and it won’t be anything easy as they travel down to the beaten intermediate finalist Burrishoole. It’s nothing but a must win game for Jack Grimes side as they lie precariously low in the league second from bottom and two points adrift from safety. After this weekend’s game Garrymore will have three games left against Aghamore, Ballyhaunis and “Celebrity Bainisteoir” winners Moy Davitts and again Garrymore will have no choice but to claim maximum points. With the extra team in the league this year means 10 points is what could be needed to survive but eight being the most likely, nevertheless Garrymore won’t be looking to the final game of the season to determine what division they will play in next year. Burrishoole the opposition Sunday are very much on the opposite end of the table going well lying in second position and the only team who will push Claremorris all the way for honours. The game is due to throw in at 12 noon down in Burrishoole. Please Support

All that being said about Garrymore’s desperate need for points in the league, it might mean nothing as currently the Mayo Co board are meeting with club managers and officials to restructure the league and fixtures for next year going forward.

Elsewhere the Garrymore Juniors who have had a magnificent year still have one game left against Aghamore B which will determine whether or not they will they win the league. On the Mayo GAA website the game is down as a walkover and conceded to Garrymore which Aghamore have done for the majority of games this year. We will clarify this in the coming days. The draw Garrymore secured two weeks ago against Kilfian means they have being promoted to division 1E next year along with either Kiltane or Shrule/Glencorrib. Well done lads!!

Ballaghadereen the new Mayo champions
22/10/20120 Comments

Ballaghadereen are the new Mayo SFC champions after dethroning last year’s winners Ballintubber by 1-9 to 0-4 in Castlebar this afternoon.

Midfielder Barry Kelly tapped home the game’s only goal in injury-time and a crisply struck ‘45’ from David Kilcullen finished off the scoring in a hard-fought but lacklustre final.

The game lacked quality particularly in a second half in which Ballintubber only scored one point, and defences were very much on top for long spells.

Ballagh’ set the early pace with points from Barry Regan, Keith Rogers and Joe Dillon with Jason Gibbons answering back for the defending champions.

A second long range free from Regan opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 advantage. By the interval, he had two more on the board to leave Ballagh’ 0-6 to 0-3 to the good.

Damien McGing and Alan Dillon claimed Ballintubber’s other first half points, and the latter opened the scoring on the resumption as the gap was cut to two points.

Both sides blundered in front of goal as crucial chances went a-begging, until Ballagh’, driven on by captain and man-of-the-match Stephen Drake, found their rhythm again in the final five minutes.

Rory Conway restarted the scoring for the east Mayo club, who put two hands on the Moclair Cup after Kelly netted from a goalmouth scramble. It is their first county title since 2008.

Tourmakeady were reduced to 14 an their wing back was given a straight red card for a late tackle on Garrymore wing back Kieran Cunningham. With that Tourmakeady held on to their lead and go into third position in the league. For Garrymore they are still looking for answers for their poor showing in the league this year. Tourmakeady the opposition Sunday
08/10/20120 Comments

Garrymore take on Tourmakeady this weekend in round 7 of the senior league. In recent years Garrymore and Tourmakeady have clashed quite regularly with very little between the sides in the end with the exception of the senior relegation playoff last year, where Garrymore came away with a very comfortable victory. Garrymore’s poor start to the league has put them under pressure to keep their division 1B status this year but a victory against Islandeady two weeks ago may be the revival they need. Tourmakeady on the flip side are having a contrasting season in the league, they are just outside the promotion spots and will be looking to put in a good finish to the league, and if things go their way maybe promotion to 1A. The game is due to throw in at 12 noon on Sunday. Please Support.

Juniors welcome Kilfian this weekend
08/10/20120 Comments

Garrymore juniors will welcome Kilfian to Garrymore for the first time at this level this weekend. For Garrymore it is a matter of not getting ahead of themselves with the finish line insight. Garrymore are top of the table on 17 points with Kiltane close behind on 16. Garrymore need just three points from their remaining two games to win the league and secure promotion to division 1E next year. The major roadblock in the way is Kilfian who after a slow start to the league have come good in the latter rounds and will be looking to keep their good run going. While they cant win the league they still have an outside chance of promotion but results would have to go their way. The game is due to throw in at 5pm on Saturday evening. Please Support

There was growing speculation that due to the constraints of the Mayo County Board financially wise that the team holiday may not go ahead.

Nonetheless, a county board official has slammed these reports and stressed that the players and management team will have a holiday, although the destination and timing were not yet known.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Mayo would not be travelling to New York as part of their free trip for winning the FBD League.

Seniors back on track
30/09/20120 Comments

Garrymore seniors came from behind with 10 minutes to go to take their second two points of the league. Garry got of to a great start with two early goals thanks to Enda Varley but sat back on their lead and allowed Islandeady into the game. Islandeady like Garrymore in the first half got a early goal in the second half and continued to enjoy large amounts of possession. Thankfully for Garrymore they got their second wind late on in the game and popped over 5 points mainly down to Jimmy Killeen. It will be a game Islandeady will feel got away from them as they missed a lot of frees and good scoring chances. Final score from Garrymore. Garrymore 2-11 Islandeady 2-08

Mayo withdraw from FBD league final
27/09/20120 Comments

Coiste Chontae Mhaigheo regrets to inform Comhairle Chonnacht and Coiste Chontae Nua Eabhrach, that they will be unable to field a team in the FBD league final in New York on October 7th.

Our involvement in the FBD league final, the abandoned national league game against Dublin and the re-fixture, the national league semi final and final, as well as our involvement in the All Ireland football final last week has had a major impact on club fixtures. In order to ensure the involvement of Mayo clubs in the Connacht club championships, we have had to reschedule our senior and intermediate football championship semi finals and ten of our present panel are involved in these games. Three of our present panel have also played for other teams in the FBD league and are therefore unavailable to play for Mayo. A further ten players are unavailable to travel due to family and work commitments, which is understandable after their commitment over the last nine months.

We realise the time and effort that the Connacht Council and the New York County Board have put into arranging this fixture, and it is with the deepest regret that we have had to take this decision.

Hoganstand team of the week.
24/09/20120 Comments

HS Football Team of the Week24 September 2012
Another football season has reached its climax and unsurprisingly our Team of the Week is dominated by players from the new All-Ireland champions, Donegal.

1. Paul Durcan (Donegal): Any goalkeeper that keeps a clean sheet on All-Ireland final day has to be commended, although his goal wasn’t threatened until Mayo substitute Seamus O’Shea broke through in injury-time.

2. Paddy McGrath (Donegal): With his opposite number Kevin Keane enduring a torrid time on Michael Murphy at the other end, the steady McGrath was an obvious choice for this position.

3. Neil McGee (Donegal): Having had his hands full with Mickey Conroy in the opening half, McGee produced a storming second half display which makes him a shoo-in for his second successive All-Star.

4. Frank McGlynn (Donegal): Shortlisted for the RTE Man of the Match award, the Glenfin clubman had a marvellous game which was decorated by an exquisite second half point.

5. Eamon McGee (Donegal): Was also nominated for the RTE gong after a typically solid display.

6. Karl Lacey (Donegal): While he sacrificed his own game to man-mark Mayo dangerman Alan Dillon, the Footballer of the Year-elect still had a huge influence on proceedings. Picked out Michael Murphy with a brilliant diagonal pass for the first goal.

7. Anthony Thompson (Donegal): Put in a great shift in what was arguably his finest display of the year.

8. Neil Gallagher (Donegal): Had a terrific third quarter after struggling to make his presence felt in the first half. Capped an effective performance with Donegal’s insurance point.

9. Aidan O’Shea (Mayo): While it wasn’t his best performance ever for Mayo, O’Shea tried hard on a day when his midfield partner Barry Moran never got going.

10. Kevin McLoughlin (Mayo): A very under-rated player, McLoughlin settled Mayo after their nightmare start with a couple of excellent points.

11. Leo McLoone (Donegal): Not a great day for centre forwards with McLoone and his Mayo counterpart Jason Doherty both being substituted. On the basis that Doherty was first to go, we’ll give it to McLoone.

12. Alan Dillon (Mayo): Another disappointing All-Ireland for the Ballintubber man, but he was still marginally better than Donegal’s Mark McHugh, who took a heavy knock from Lee Keegan early on.

13. Enda Varley (Mayo): On a day when Patrick McBrearty failed to shine for Donegal, Varley showed character to land an important second half free after missing two earlier.

14. Michael Murphy (Donegal): A man of the match performance from the 23-year-old captain who sent Donegal on their way with his superb early goal.

15. Colm McFadden (Donegal): How this man wasn’t shortlisted for the RTE Man of the Match award is a mystery. Took his goal brilliantly and was unerring from placed balls as usual.

Donegal are Champs
24/09/20120 Comments

Mayo manager James Horan conceded that Donegal’s early brace of goals were a killer for his side as he reflected on his sides All-Ireland Final defeat at Croke Park this afternoon.

Donegal stormed to an early 2-1 to 0-0 lead, which provided the platform for the Ulster men to take a first title since 1992.

“I suppose if you give a team like Donegal a seven-point start at the beginning of the game, it’s going to be very difficult to come back,” Horan said immediately after the game.

“Having said that, we stuck at it and we had chances. If we had taken them, we could have been closer. I suppose during the game as regards our play, some of the fundamentals of the game weren’t as strong as they need to be today.

“Our first touch inside was letting us down. The ball was hopping off us quite a bit.

“Donegal were sweeping up and coming out in waves so that was difficult to deal with. Some of our decision making today and some of our basic skills let us down a little bit.”

Horan felt that Mayo’s defensive display at the start of this game was less than impressive, as Michael Murphy and Colm McFadden stuck in for early three-pointers.

“The two of them should have been defended better,” he said.

“The first goal, it was one of the first balls in. Michael Murphy got a yard and struck a very good shot, but it’s not like us.

“The second goal was a bit of a lottery. Struck off a post, we had it again and dropped it. That was hard to take.

“I think it was the first goal or second goal that came from where we had it in the corner spot and we dropped it there as well.

“They tried various things at various stages. We dealt with any thing or any way they played. The goals that went in were just basic mistakes that we made higher up the pitch and that gave them an opportunity. I don’t think it’s anything to do with how Donegal set up or played. It’s just some of our basic skills let us down.”

Garrymore juniors produced an excellent display of football to go top of the division 1F this evening. The result was in no doubt after 5 minutes of play as Garrymore raced into a 5 point lead and stopped Ballinrobe from getting out of their own half. Garrymore lead at half time 0-11 to 0-1 and continued the excellent work of the first into the second half. Anthony Killeen found the net from the throw in and they never looked back running out 2-20 to 0-03 winners. Garrymore have three games left in the league against Kilfian, Aghamore B and Tourmakeady B if they were to win their remaining games they will win the league.

Ballagh’ get the better of Garry’
12/08/20120 Comments

Ballaghaderreen advance to the county semi final after a comprehensive victory over Garrymore yesterday evening. Garrymore get of to a very bad start, right from the throw-in the Ballagh wind back charged up the field unchallenged and shot past Morven Connolly in to the Garymore goal. To Garrymore’s credit they battled back from the poor start and got stuck into Ballaghaderreen whick made enjoyable game of fooball. Garrymore had the wind in the first half and went in at half-time trailing by two points 1-7 to 1-5 the goal coming courtesy of Enda Varley. The second half was all Ballaghadereen as Garrymore failed to live with the pace Ballagh’ were injecting into the game, directly after the restart Ballagh’ added three quick points and a goal a few minutes later. Shane Nally, Martin Maloney and Enda Varley gave their best for the men in red but it was a hungrier Ballaghaderreen team who progress to the semi finals to play Knockmore. Final score Garrymore 1-09 Ballaghaderreeen 2-18. Match report and photos to follow.

Quarter final preview
08/08/20120 Comments

By Edwin McGreal, Mayo News

Nice and quietly Ballaghaderreen have come under the radar to the quarter-finals and, before Andy Moran’s season-ending knee injury last weekend, we thought there was a great opportunity for them to be playing in the County final with the way the draw has fallen.

The men from the east have always been contenders in recent years on the basis of their talent, However, their form hasn’t backed up that up often enough.

This year they looked impressive in their Ballagh’ have always had the personnel. In Andy’s absence, the onus is now on Barry Regan inside, and Andy Hanley is finding his best form in the half-forward line, while drakes, Rogers and Kilcullens all have loads to offer.

Garrymore haven’t been in their best form this year but still done enough to make a rare advancement from the group stages, as confusing as that sounds. Like Knockmore, caveats surround the relative strength of their group but if Garry’ do find form, they’ll be a match for a lot of teams.

Jimmy Killeen, Enda Varley, Shane Nally, Martin Maloney, David Dolan and Caolan Crowe are among the men who will relish the knockout stages but if both sides play like they can, Ballagh’ have the greater talent, even without their inspirational talisman

Mayo run riot against Mourne men
06/08/20120 Comments

Mayo 3-18
Down 2-9

The first ever championship meeting between Mayo and Down turned out to something of a damp squib at Croke Park this evening with the Connacht champions scoring a comprehensive 12-point All-Ireland SFC quarter-final victory.

The game was effectively over as a contest with 25 minutes left on the clock when Michael Conroy – who was a late addition to the Westerners’ starting 15 – struck for his second goal to give James Horan’s charges a commanding 3-9 to 1-6 lead.

Mayo seized the initiative early on courtesy of Jason Doherty’s fifth minute goal and they held a six point advantage at the break after Conroy had raised his first, and his team’s second, green flag eight minutes before the half-time whistle.

The win came at a cost, however, as Andy Moran sustained a serious looking knee injury in the 53rd minute.

The full-forward – who had caused plenty of headaches for the Mourne County defence – appeared to go over on his knee as he was tracking back and required a stretcher to leave the field.

He faces a race against time to be fit for Mayo’s All-Ireland SFC semi-final fixture.

Doherty gave Mayo the perfect start when sliding the ball under the advancing Brendan McVeigh after being sent clean through by Moran.

Captain Moran then kicked the first point of the contest in the 8th minute following determined approach play by Keith Higgins and Alan Dillon.

Aidan O’Shea – who was also a late change on the Mayo starting 15 – dominated the early midfield exchanges along with his midfield partner Barry Moran and their Ulster opponents were struggling to gain a foothold around the middle third of the field.

Left half-back Aidan Carr opened Down’s account in the 11th minute from a 30m free but a pull on Andy Moran’s jerseys gave Cillian O’Connor the simple task of restoring the Connacht champions four point cushion.

Carr again showed his forwards how it was done when kicking his team’s first point from play and the Mourne County trailed by 0-2 to 1-2 at the end of the opening quarter of an hour.

The sides were level a minute later when Kalum King got on the end of a movement involving Laverty and Benny Coulter to beat Mayo netminder David Clarke from close range for his first ever championship goal.

Dillon replied with a point for James Horan’s charges but Carr struck for his third point soon after and there was nothing separating the teams at the 20 minute mark.

The crossbar denied O’Connor a goal in the 22nd minute but Conroy gained some compensation for the Westerners when sending the rebound over the bar.

Carr and O’Connor traded frees before wing-forward Kevin McLoughlin set up Conroy for Mayo’s second goal in the 27th minute.

A brace of O’Connor frees gave Mayo a 2-7 to 1-6 cushion at half-time and the Moran captained side were full value for their six point lead.

The second half started as the first had ended with the team in green and red in the ascendancy and O’Connor converted a free within a minute of the resumption.

Half-time Down substitute Liam Doyle found the target from a placed ball in the 38th minute but O’Connor raised his sixth white flag of the game a minute later when Conor Garvey was penalised for a foul on Conroy.

Benny Coulter registered his first point of the game in the 40th minute but Conroy effectively ended the game as a contest when his second goal eight minutes into the second half.

Andy Moran showed good awareness to find O’Connor in space with a quick free and the centre-forward handpassed the ball across the face of the Down goalmouth to the waiting Conroy who palmed the ball to the net.

That left the scoreboard reading 3-9 to 1-6 and there was muted response when Carr landed a free shortly after.

A Dillon point from play restored Mayo’s nine-point advantage and the remaining 20 minutes resembled a cakewalk for the winners although Moran’s injury took some of the gloss of their success.

Coulter netted a late consolation goal for James McCartan’s men in the second minute of added-on time.

Seniors out of MW league
29/07/20120 Comments

Garrymore seniors were knocked out of the MW league yesterday evening after a playoff against Kiltane. Garrymore started the game with a much changed team to the team that lined out against Knockmore in the championship the week before. There was 13 changes in all but those changes didn’t make much of a difference as Kiltane came away with a 7 point victory on a scoreline of 3-04 to 3-11. Garrymore started very brightly but they suffered the same fate as the week before wasting a lot of good scoring chances. Garrymore still would of being happy going in at half time four points down as they were playing against a very strong wind. Half time Garrymore 1-3 Kiltane 2-4. The second half was a half to forget for the South Mayo men as Garrymore only produced a mere 1-1 with a strong wind and conceded 1-7. Kiltane will go on to play Crossmolina in the quarter in a couple of weeks time. Final score from Islandeady, Garrymore 3-04 Kiltane 3-11
MW League Play-off
28/07/20120 Comments

Garrymore play Kiltane tonight in a play-off game to see who qualifys for the Michael Walsh league 1/4 finals. The reason for the play-off is because both teams finished on the same amount of points but Breaffy for-fitted their last game to Kiltane thus ruling out score difference in separating Garrymore and Kiltane. The game is due to throw in at 7.45pm in Islandeady and the winner will play Crossmolina in a couple of weeks time. Please Support

Weekend Preview
17/07/20120 Comments

Memories of golden years of both clubs will come flooding back when theses two sleeping giants locks horns again. The two of them enjoyed some great battles back in the 70’s and 80’s but, with both sides qualified for the quarter-finals, there is bound to be something missing this time around. However, there is still the opportunity for one of them to top the group and maintain therirunbeaten record. The smart money would have to be on knockmore, especially playing at home and knowing Ray Dempsey’s fierce competitive instinct. It will be interesting to see though how Garry’ match up.

Final round of the MW league
14/07/20120 Comments

Garrymore Seniors traveled to Westport yesterday evening in the final round of fixtures for the group stage of the Michael Walsh league. Garrymore new going into ther game that even a loss could still secure the passage to the quarter finals but they would have to wait till Kiltane play Breaffy tonight. Like the Shrule/Glencorrib game Garrymore started very brightly but unlike like that championship game Garrymore did not convert their chances in front of goal. Garrymore trailed Westport at half time 0-3 to 0-5, despite all Garrymore’s good work early on in the game they let Westport creep back into the game and it was they home side who finished the stronger and they too wont be happy with their shooting on the day. Within 8 minutes of the restart Garrymore had cancelled out Westports lead and went one ahead 0-6 to 0-5 but midway through the half Westport got one of two goals, the westport midfielder made a charging run through the Garrymore defence a shot low past Morven Connolly. 5 minutes later Westport got in for their second, their corner forward got in behind the Garrymore cover and rounder the keeper and passed the ball into a empty net. The second goal sprung Garrymore into life again and they started to get possession around the middle, Garry finished the game very strong with three unanswered points but the gap was too big to claw back in the time that was left. Garrymore had to do without their Dublin contingent on the night but had some good displays through the field. Garrymore are all but through as Kiltane would have to beat Breaffy by more that 17 points in order to qualify for the quarter finals.

Enda gets his chance on Sunday
13/07/20120 Comments

Enda Varley has been drafted into the Mayo team for Sunday’s Connacht SFC final against Sligo at Hyde Park.

Varley replaces Alan Freeman at right corner forward in the only change from the side that trounced Leitrim by 22 points in the semi-final three weeks ago. Seamus O’Shea (groin), Peadar Gardiner (foot) and Aidan Campbell (hip) weren’t considered due to injury, but a fit-again Aidan O’Shea will be available to come in if required.

Mayo are bidding to win back-to-back Nestor Cups for the first time since 1996-97 when current boss James Horan was involved as a player.

Mayo (SF v Sligo): D Clarke; K Keane, G Cafferkey, K Higgins; L Keegan, D Vaughan, C Boyle; B Moran, D Geraghty; K McLoughlin, C O’Connor, A Dillon; E Varley, A Moran (captain), J Doherty.

MW league draw v Kiltane
08/07/20120 Comments

Kiltane made the long journey up to Garrymore yesterday evening and the journey wasnt in vein for the Bangor men as they came away with a share of the points. The result leaves Garrymore in with a shout for qualifying for the knockout stages, they will need a win against Westport in the next round to quarantee it. Garrymore stated off very brightly and dominated the early exchanged but couldn’t turn it into scores, that left Kiltane in the game and the game was to swing right round in the second 15 minutes of the half as Kiltane enjoyed the majority of possession but they too failed to turn all the possession into scores. The difference between the sides at half time was a well taken Mickey Sweeney goal, he found himself one on one with Morven Connolly and with the minimum of space chipped the ball over the keeper and into the Garrymore goal. The second half was just as close of an affair with both sides trading scores throughout the half. Garrymore came from behind to take a share of the spoils and still leave themselves in with a shout for qualifying for the finals.

Did it ever happen before that a home team scored 1-16 in the Mayo SFC and still lost the game? That was the fate of Shrule/Glencorrib when they entertained Knockmore in May, and it now leaves the Black river men in grave danger of missing out in a place in the quarter finals. A win against Garrymore in Round 2 would rejuvenate their hopes, But Garry’ are notoriously hard beaten at home. Even league form makes it hard to separate these two teams, as between them, at the time of writing, they have won only one of 10 league games played so far this year. If home advantage does swing in Garrymore’s favour, then there is the real possibility that the qualifiers from this group will be decided even before the third and final round of games because Knockmore are favourites to win away to Aghamore next time out. They scored 1-18 at Shrule/Glencorrib in Round 1 and Aghamore only scored 1-4 at Garrymore.

Mayo stroll past Leitrim
27/06/20120 Comments

Mike Finnerty

WE weren’t quite sure what to expect from this 28th meeting of the counties in the Connacht Championship but we certainly never envisaged spectators streaming away from the ground with twenty minutes to go last Sunday.
The final scoreline screams ‘rout’ and that was exactly what panned out as Mayo justified their outrageous favouritism by putting Leitrim to the sword at their leisure.
Their reward for this stroll in the glorious afternoon sunshine is a shot at Sligo in the provincial final next month; the first meeting of the teams at this stage of the competition since the 1997 war of attrition.
James Horan was at pains afterwards to play down Mayo’s impressive victory but there was no disguising the statistics that highlighted the gulf in class and quality that separated the teams.
Thirteen different Mayo players scored as the reigning champions clocked up 4-14 from play and held an outclassed Leitrim to just five points from play.
Barry Moran, by common consensus the man of the match, claimed 19 possessions from kick-outs on a day when he did as he wished on his home pitch.
Either side of him, aside from a slow-burning first quarter, Mayo looked fit, strong, fresh and were nothing if not professional in how they went about their work.
Such a facile and comprehensive victory seemed unlikely at the end of the first quarter with things evenly-balanced and Mayo just edging it by 0-6 to 0-5.
Leitrim had been level twice by that juncture and it had taken classy scores from Keith Higgins, Lee Keegan and Alan Dillon to keep the locals ahead of the posse.
At the other end, Emlyn Mulligan was reveling in the play-making role and kicking points for fun. One outrageous score from play stands out while his free-taking was exemplary too.
The narrative of the day changed completely though on 23 minutes when Andy Moran, Lee Keegan and Alan Freeman linked up at pace in the Mayo forward line and Freeman rounded the ‘keeper before firing the ball into the roof of the net.
Danny Geraghty then powered through to tag on a point on his debut and Mayo led by double scores.
Leitrim responded well initially with Emlyn Mulligan converting a couple of frees to keep them in touch, but Mayo were starting to get into their rhythm after eight weeks in cold storage.
There were 31 minutes on the watch when Andy Moran netted for the first time in the championship since the 2006 All-Ireland semi-final and Cillian O’Connor (free) and the marauding Barry Moran tagged on points to turn the screw.
When the half-time whistle blew, Mayo were 2-9 to 0-7 ahead and their supporters in the crowd of 14,398 were content as they basked in the good weather.
The hard work was done, and the second half turned out to be nothing more than a training spin for Mayo as Leitrim’s challenge wilted all over the field.
In the first half the challengers tackled hard, stitched together some good moves, and created a string of scoring opportunities.
However, they were brushed aside in the second period as Mayo’s defence shut up shop, Barry Moran directed operations at midfield, and Cillian O’Connor got in some free-taking practice as the incessant pressure told.
James Horan, meanwhile, pitched in five subs with Richie Feeney, Ronan McGarrity, Enda Varley and Michael Conroy all making the most of their auditions.
Conor Mortimer, however, was strangely subdued in the twenty minutes he spent on the field.
Andy Moran’s second goal on 53 minutes left Mayo ahead by 3-14 to 0-8 and some fans were halfway home when Kevin McLoughlin slammed in a fourth goal in the 70th minute.
In between, a dark day for Leitrim was compounded in the closing stages when full-back, Fabian McMorrow, was sent off for a second booking.
By that stage the Sligo manager, Kevin Walsh, had concluded his note-taking for the day and Mayo minds were already planning for Sunday, July 15.
The championship starts for real for the holders next time out.

Congratulations Carras U14’s
20/06/20125 Comments

Congratulations to the Carras U14 team who beat Achill after extra time in the Division 4B league final this afternoon. Carras got of to the better start but they trailed Achill at half time 2-2 to 0-4. To Carras credit they battled and had the better of the possession in the second half and went ahead late into the half and looked like they would nick the game, but Achill showed their composure and sealed a draw at the very end. Carras 1-09 Achill 2-06. The game went into extra time and with the start Achill had, it looked like they would push on but again the never say die attitude of the Carras men, they brought the lead back to a point at half time in extra time. The second half of extra time was all Carras as they added 2-1 without reply to capture the title and fitting that it was captain Gerard Connolly who got the winning goal for the Carras men. The final score from McHale Park, Carras 3-12 Achill 2-09.

Photos of the game to follow tomorrow.

Tommy Connolly RIP
16/06/20120 Comments

It was with extreme sadness we heard of the death of Tommy Connolly a past Garrymore great. Tommy survived by his wife Mary and three children James, Geard and Fiona sadly passed away on Wednesday night. Tommy was a wonderful corner forward in his day and known for his direct approach to goal, and with his ball carrying ability he was almost impossible to dispossess. He was part of the magnificent Garrymore team’s of the 70’s and 80’s and holds two county Senior Championship medals. Tommy played at all ages right up till senior for Garrymore and was the youngest member of the Garrymore team that lined up against Nemo Rangers in the All Ireland final in 1982 at age 20. A true characteristic of Tommy was his eye for goal and he will be remembered in the Garrymore history books for his winning goal in the 1982 county final against Castlebar to give Garrymore their sixth county title. Tommy will be sorely missed by his everyone in Garrymore.

Juniors run comes to a end
13/06/20120 Comments

Garrymore Juniors good run has come to a end this evening in the South Junior Championship. Garrymore remained unbeaten in their previous eight games but fell at the hands of Shrule/Glencorrib. Garrymore started the more brightly, leading after 10 minutes 0-3 to 0-2 but it was at this point Garrymore lost the lead and didn’t regain it for the rest of the game. The Garrymore defence stood up to the youthful Shrule/Glencorrib forward line with Captain Sean Regan and James Coleman most notably standing out for the men in red. Garrymore went in at half time trailing 0-6 to 0-7, the Garrymore points coming from Brian Lynskey and Ronan Quinn. The second half started like the first with Garrymore winning a lot of ball but they failed to turn it into scores and when Shrule/Glencorrib got it they made it count. Shrule/Glencorrib ran out 5 point winners on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-10. Next up for Garrymore in the South Mayo Junior Championship is Hollymount/Carramore. No date has being set for the game.

Garry suffer another league defeat

Garrymore suffered another league defeat, this time to the hands of Kiltimagh. Garrymore started brightly but went in at half time two points down. Like the first half Garrymore had the better of the opening exchanges but mid way through the half Kiltimagh grabbed two quick goals and never looked back. They held onto this lead and ran out six point winners on a scoreline of 3-08 to 0-11. Match Report to follow.

Kiltimagh preview
08/06/20120 Comments

Tomorrow evening will see Garrymore travel to Kiltimagh in the final round of the league before the break in the league. Both sides have had similar starts to the league with Garrymore gaining two points from a possible eight while Kiltimagh are still waiting for their first win, saying that Kiltimagh have only played two games in the league so far. Garrymore will be looking to continue their recent run of wins against Aghamore in the championship and Swinford in the league Saturday evening.

Meanwhile Kiltimagh at this stage are a very difficult team to judge, they have only played two league games, one of them against near neighbours Ballyhaunis and one championship game against another local team Swinford. As we well know in South Mayo form counts for nothing when it comes to derby games.

Kiltimagh and Garrymore have met twice in the last two years once in Garrymore were Garrymore came away with the two points in the league and last year down in Kiltimagh when the two sides finished with a point each. The recent weather conditions won’t make for pretty viewing in Kiltimagh on Saturday evening, but for both sides it’s about the points and nothing else.

Swinford Preview
02/06/20120 Comments

Round four of the senior league will see Garrymore welcome Swinford to Garrymore on Monday. This was originally fixed for the Saturday evening but was pushed off a couple of days due to Swinford’s involvement in the intermediate championship against Kiltimagh. Both teams have had contrasting starts to the league. Garrymore couldn’t have got off to a worse start losing their opening three games but things might have turned for Garry, winning their championship first round game last weekend to Aghamore. The main talking point around Garrymore has been the injury list Jack Grimes has had to deal with, after the game against Aghamore it looks like they will have to do without top scorer Jimmy Killeen with a leg injury. Swinford currently lie joint top of the league on five points with Burrishoole, Claremorris and Aghamore. They had excellent victories over Tourmakeady and Kiltimagh and a hard fought draw with Islandeady. Garrymore and Swinford haven’t met much in recent years, the last was in 2009 in the very last league game of the year when Swinford were already relegated and Garrymore were mid table with nothing to play for. Like all Garrymore games this year it has been very difficult to predict the outcome as the availability of players has changed from week to week. One thing is sure on Monday Swinford will coming to Garrymore not lacking in confidence and that level may be higher if they were to win on Saturday evening over their near neighbours Kiltimagh in the championship.

Juniors record excellent win
30/05/20120 Comments

Garrymore Juniors recorded a excellent win over Ballinrobe in the South Junior Championship this evening. The game was played in front of a decent crowd in the Ballinrobe Community school pitch. Garry played against the wind in the first half but that didn’t seem to faze them as they played a free flowing game with some excellent scores and movement from the forwards. The Garrymore defence wasn’t really tested in the first half but anything that came their way the dealt with accordingly. Garrymore lead at half time 2-11 to 0-3 the goals coming courtesy of Ronan Quinn and Derek Corcoran. They let the foot of the pedal early in the second half and let Ballinrobe come back into the game but Garry had done enough in the first half to kill off the game. A further 1-8 was added in the second half, an excellent individual goal from midfielder Gary golden who made a searching run through the Ballinrobe defence and slotted the ball low past the Robe keeper. Garrymore ran out 3-19 to 2-07 winners. Garry had excellent performances with each played contributing to a fine win over Ballinrobe. The new Junior management of Geoff O’Neil, Fintan Forde and Brendan Murphy will be delighted with their start to the South Junior Championship. Next up is Hollymount/Carramore next Wednesday evening at 8pm in Garrymore.

Championship round up

Mayo SFC Round Up By Colm Gannon

The defending champions Ballintubber laid down a marker for the rest of the sides in the county that they will not be giving up their championship easy this year when they blitzed their way through what looked like a potentially tricky opening round encounter against local rivals Breaffy with a 1-14 to 0-3 win. Breaffy were always going to be up against it facing the defending champions on their own patch in the opening round, but having to go into the game without both Seamus and Aidan O’Shea it was going to need a huge effort from them if they were going to take anything from the game.

But Ballintubber weren’t in a mood to let Breaffy away with anything, the first thirty minutes saw Peter Ford’s side hold Breaffy scoreless in the baking heat of Prendergast Memorial Park in Clogher. Both Padraic and Cillian O’Connor chipped in with two points each, while Alan Dillon and Damien McGing both got in on the act with a point each to give their side a 0-6 to 0-0 lead.

Ballintubber were totally dominant throughout and were the first to every ball and played with a lot more physicality and purpose than their opponents, with Jason Gibbons and Danny Geraghty putting in a big shift in the middle of the park.

Ballintubber had the lead stretched out to eight points two minutes into the second half with Cillian O’Connor and Alan Plunkett on target. Breaffy finally got off the mark when Tommy Reilly put over a free from close range. Reilly was one of four different Breaffy players who took on free taking duties over the course of the hour, with Robbie Hennelly, Marty McNicholas and Alan Durcan all off target during the game. Breaffy did manage to get their second point pretty shortly after when Kevin Scahill up field from his duties of tracking Alan Dillon got on a loose ball. Ballintubber weren’t in the mood to let their opponents back into the game. Cillian O’Connor hit two quick fire points.

Whatever lingering doubt that could possibly be left was extinguished with 14 minutes to go, when Alan Plunkett was on the end of a powerful Ballintubber drive up the field and put the ball into the net from close in. Ballintubber rounded out the victory with scores from McGing (twice), Plunkett and Cillian O’Connor. Ballintubber made it look easy at stages on Sunday and Breaffy never got going at all, the champions kept their foot down right until the final whistle, long after the outcome of the game had been decided.

The other game in that group took place in Ballindine where last years intermediate champions Davitts welcomed their own neighbours Claremorris. It was the visitors who when home with the points after a 1-10 to 0-9 win on the borderline. The Claremorris goal came from James Shaughnessy early in the first half. Claremorris went in leading by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break, but could have been further in front if they hadn’t kicked a number of wides. The Davitts challenge wasn’t helped by loosing veteran defender Alan Roache to injury early in the first half. Davitts did come strong in the second half, outscoring their guests by 0-5 to 0-3 in the final 30 minutes and closed the gap down to only two points at one stage near the finish, but it wasn’t enough as Claremorris held on to claim the points.

Knockmore battle back to steal it at the death

In section one, both Knockmore and Garrymore were the winners this weekend. Garrymore kicked things off on Saturday evening with a low scoring 1-6 to 1-4 win over Aghamore in Garrymore. Garrymore were leading by 1-4 to 0-2 at the break and the fact that they were only able to add on two more points in the second half is something that Jack Grimes will be hoping his side can improve on in their next outing. It was actually Aghamore who took the lead at the start of the game with a pointed free from Darren Duffy after six minutes, but from there on in it was Garrymore who took control in the half. Shane Nally kicked a point from play, then Jimmy Killeen pointed brace of frees. One from close to the sideline and the other from just outside the 45m line. Sean Golden chipped in with a point to put Garrymore 0-4 to 0-1 into the lead.

The large home crowd were given even more reason to cheer with eight minutes left in the half when Garrymore plundered their goal. Corner back Martin Maloney charged up the field and found himself 14 yards out from the Aghamore goal with the ball in his hand. At the last moment it looked like the ball had just been knocked from his possession, but he was able to connect with the ball as it dropped and loft it past Niall Walsh into the back of the net. Aghamore did cut the cap back to five points just before the break with a long range free from Alan Freeman. Just after the turn around the visitors were given a foothold back in the game when Kenny Feeney was fouled in the penalty area and referee Declan Corcoran awarded a penalty. Up stepped Alan Freeman who drove the ball to the back of the net despite the best efforts of Morven Connolly in the Garrymore goal. It was a nervous display form both sides after that goal, with numerous attacking moves breaking down for both sides Sean Golden and Martin Maloney kicked Garrymore’s last two points with Freeman landing the last two Aghamore scores of the game.

The other game in the group played out on the borderline saw Knockmore battle back from what was looking like a surprise defeat to Shrule-Glenncorrib in south Mayo to steal a win. In a high scoring game, the visitors lead by 1-8 to 0-10 at the break with Declan Sweeney scoring the goal, with Aidan Kilcoyne in fine form for Knockmore. As the game reached the three quarter mark, a goal from Ronan Walsh saw the hosts move into the lead. They went into injury time in the lead, but three injury time points from the north Mayo men put pulled the points out of the fire on a scoreline of 1-18 to 1-16.

Ballinrobe make a statement of intent

In section two it’s Ballinrobe who are sitting pretty at the top of the table after the first round of games. The south Mayo men made the trip to Crossmolina and went home with the points thanks to a comprehensive eight point win over the Deel Rovers. Ballinrobe were always in control of this contest going in leading by 1-8 to 0-7 at half time, the Ballinrobe goal coming from Alan Murphy who scored 1-6 for Ballinrobe over the hour.. In the second period Ballinrobe turned on the style and were 2-9 to 0-8 in the lead after only 34 minutes, with Ballinrobe’s second goal coming from James Quinn. With five minutes left on the clock Ballinrobe were nine points clear and the points were heading back home to south Mayo with Norman O’Brien’s side.

Next up for Ballinrobe is Pat Holmes Castlebar Mitchels who themselves went away from home and came back with the points. Mitchels went up to Kiltane for what promised to be a tough examination and came home victors by five points on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8. Castlebar went in leading at the break by 1-10 to 1-3 with with Ronan O’Boyle finding the back of the net for Castlebar and Mikey Sweeney slotting home a penalty for the hosts. The second half saw a big shift in the play with Kiltane the ones doing the scoring and with 15 minutes left they had cut the gap to only three points. But Castlebar, dug in and pulled away in the closing stages to bring home the two points.

Ballagh’ lay down a marker

In section four, Ballaghderren are out in front at the top of the group thanks to a comprehensive ten point win over Tourmakeady in the Gaeltacht on Sunday evening. Andy Moran who was a doubt in the build up to the game was named amongst the subs, but the Mayo captain along with Barry Regan who was also wearing a subs jersey were drafted into the starting 15 before the throw in.

Ballaghaderreen were simply a different class from their opponents, and were leading by 1-6 to 0-0 after a quarter of an hour with Andy Moran finding the back of the net from close range and generally leading the Tourmakeady defense on a merry dance. At the break Ballaghderreen were in front by 1-11 to 1-3 with the Tourmakeady goal coming after a long free in was misjudged by the Ballaghderreen goal keeper as it dropped short of the target and slipped through his hands into the back of the net. The second half played out at a canter as the east Mayo side took their foot off the gas a little and Tourmakeady battled right until the end, showing their never say die spirit.

The other game in the section ended in a 0-8 to 0-8 draw between Anthony McGarry’s Ballina and Tomás Tierney’s up and coming Westport side in Ballina. In a nip and tuck affair neither side could build up a a substantial lead and Westport leveled the game at the death to share the points

Garrymore recorded their first win in the group stage of the championship in two years with a two point victory win over Aghamore. Aghamore started the brighter win the opening score of the game. Garrymore settled down and moved the ball move freely into the forwards but just went in five points clear at half time with the wind to their backs. In the second half Garrymore battled and enjoyed their fair share of possession but failed to turn it into scores. Aghamore battled right to the end but were just pipped to the post by a more committed Garrymore side. March report to follow.

Weekend preview with the local papers
22/05/20120 Comments

Mike Finnerty Mayo News
Before a ball was kicked in the league this looked like a straightforward assignment for Garrymore. Jack Grimes had taken over and they seemed ready to kick on. Aghamore, by contrast, had lost a plethora of players to emigration and transfers and Sean Finnegan’s outfit were destined to be a long year. However, two games into the Division 1B league and Aghamore and riding high on top of the table and unbeaten while Garrymore are rooted at the bottom, without a win. Garry’ have a lot of injuries, including doubts over Tony Corcoran and Caolan Crowe, and the Freemans and their young teammates will have no fear. Pride, and home advantage should prove vital. Vertict: Garrymore

Anthony Hennigan Western People
It might be worth avoiding the temptation of reading too much into the early league form of both these sides when trying to predict a winner; as Garrymore’s home advantage might negate the superior Division 1B results of the Aghamore heading into this game. Back to back league defeats to their main south Mayo rivals, Claremorris and Hollymount/Carramore hardly the ideal start to the season for Garrymore but pedigree can count for a lot, and the club is a much more seasoned senior championship outfit than that it faces next Saturday.
However since saving their ststus last season at the expense of the illustrious Charlestown, who eventually went down to Kiltane and Tourmakeady, Aghamore have begun this season just as confidently, even beating Ballina Stephenites in the Michael Walsh league before an impressive start to the league proper. Emigration had bitten the East Mayo club harder than most, yet they refuse to let that quell their expectation. And with talents like county star Alan Freeman, Colm Garvey, Enda Sweeney, Brendan Harrison, Kenny Feeney, Darren Duffy and Cathal Freeman at Sean Finnegan’s disposla they’ll give a game to most. Garrymore will need the likes of Caolan Crowe, David Dolan, Shane Nally, Jimmy Killeen, Enda Varley and the very experienced Tony Corcoran to produce their best form if they are to prevail.

Sunday preview
17/05/20120 Comments

Sunday afternoon will see Garrymore travel to Bangor to take on Kiltane in the third round of the league. Garrymore have suffered two defeats from their opening two games against Claremorris and Hollymount/Carramore. Garry were not helped in their opening games by the long injury list they have and especially worrying going into the championship in 10 days time. Sunday now for Garrymore has become an important game in respect to their ambitions for the rest of the season, another defeat would surly wave away any chances Garry have of promotion.

Kiltane have just one game under their belts so far in the league that was a round two draw to Islandeady. Their first round game against Kiltimagh was postponed. Garrymore have had the upper hand against Kiltane when the game has being played in Garrymore but away in Bangor things haven’t always gone their way. Two years ago Garrymore came away with a creditable draw but two years before that it was a day to forget for Garrymore.

No doubt Jack Grimes will have his fittest 15 players in the right frame of mind going into this game knowing that championship is just a week away. It’s a very hard game to call with Kiltane only playing one game so far and Garrymore with their injury list but one thing is for sure, you won’t get anything easy down in Bangor.

The rules are quite simple, it’s basically Gaelic football but once players are tagged, they must turn over possession. Scores, solo-running, hand passing and the pick-up can be altered to better suit the needs of the players. It’s also a fantastic way of working up a sweat!
“This game should appeal to guys who have retired from the competitive side of GAA and are looking to get active, meet some old friends and have a bit of fun” commented Mayo GAA Games Manager Billy Mc Nicholas.
Indeed as part of the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival it is planned to have a mini Peil Abú blitz on Saturday 26th May from 4pm – 6pm at the superb Westport GAA facility.
“ We are delighted to support this recreational activity which is open to all. The activity links in perfectly with the “Get Out There Festival” which promotes Westport as a top destination for the outdoor life” added Mayo Sports Partnership Sports Co-ordinator Charlie Lambert
Participants must be over 18 and need to be in possession of a tracksuit and runners! All tags, bibs and additional equipment will be provided on location.
To register your interest or to find out more about the initiative contact Mayo GAA Peil Abú co-ordinator Eamonn O Malley at 087 1360936.

Its round two of the Senior league this Saturday evening where Garrymore will entertain Hollymount/Carramore. There was a contrasting start to the league for both sides, Garrymore suffered a away defeat to Claremorris while Hollymount/Carramore had a hard fought win over fello intermediate side Islandeady. While it is very early in the league to say it’s a must win game for Garrymore but another loss would make promotion extremely difficult with visits to Bangor and Newport to come. The early rounds of the league this year have an extra bite in them with the early start of the championship, all teams will be looking to go into championship with decent performances behind them. Hollymount/Carramore the O’Mara cup champions of 2012 have a lot of momentum behind them winning their first league game as well as the O’Mara cup and will be tough turn over on Saturday with that behind them. Garrymore and Hollymount/Carramore have met twice since the club was newly formed. The first outing in Garrymore last May, Garrymore came away with the victory but not without a scare, Garrymore were going comfortable through the game until Holly/Carra drew Garry level with under 10 minutes to go before Garrymore found another gear and pulled away with a three point win. Last February was a different story, the two teams slogged it out in terrible conditions in the first round of the O’Mara cup. That day Garrymore came from behind and got a draw out of the game. Saturday will be a very interesting affair for both sides as Garrymore have lost a number of players through injury from last year’s game and Holly/Carra go into this game with a lot of momentum behind them. The game is due to throw in at 7pm in Garrymore with Ronan Gurren officiating.

It difficult to imagine but in Division 1F in only round six we have possible a title decider. Garrymore and Shrule/Glencorrib will go to battle for top of the table. Both sides have won their opening five games and are starting to pull away from the rest with Tourmakeady just keeping tabs on them. Junior football can be hard to predict because of player availability but one thing is sure on Sunday both sides will have their strongest available players playing. Both sides have had some testing games already in the league, Garrymore went down to Bangor and took on a very strong Kiltane team and came away with a 3 point win while in round 4 Garry needed a last minute goal to steal the victory away from Parke. Shrule/Glencorrib on the other hand have had some very close encounters. Only in round 5 they came away with a one point win at home to Kilfian. It has been a few years since Garrymore and Shrule/Glencorrib at Junior level but that won’t count for anything as both teams have changed a lot change. The game is due to throw in at 2pm on Sunday in Garrymore. Please Support

Elsewhere the draw for the Junior B Championship and the U-21 Championship has been provisionally drawn.

Passing of Last of Garrymore Magnificent Seven
By Frank Kearney

The last weekend in April 2012 saw the passing of Paddy Prendergast, the last of a group of seven young men who became known as Garrymore football history as the Magnificent Seven having served time in Gaol for playing football.
Paddy Prendergast of Killeenrevagh was one of three brothers who were part of the seven young men in the early 1940’s who were sentenced to seven days in Sligo Gaol for their right to continue to play football in a field where they had done all their lives.
It was during the days of the second World War when the use of land was to the maximum by local farms in more difficult times than we have now in Ireland, and training was a problem in many areas not alone Garrymore, as only a few people allowed the club footballers to train and play football on their lands.
There was a corner of a field in a large farm in the Killeenreavagh area of Garrymore that was used for many years by the aspiring young men of the area who were all budding footballers of the fledging Garrymore Football Club which was formed just a few years earlier in 1936. This piece of land changed ownership and the new tenant went to stop football from being played on the lands. However the young men from the area refused and after a number of warnings to stop playing football in this field, the youths found themselves the wrath of the police and ended up in court.
Eight young men who were found in the field on the day were all fined One Pound on the order of the judge or face imprisonment. Needless to say the fine was not going to be paid as money of that nature was scarce at the time of economic depression and the officials of the club gave these young men full backing in their right for play football on these lands.
Having refused to pay the fine of One Pound, the youth’s faced imprisonment, but the club stepped in to pay the fine of the one of the youths, as his father was very ill, so that he wouldn’t have to go to jail as he was needed at home.
However the remaining seven were summoned to appear at Ballindine Garda Station two days before Christmas in 1941 to be collected to be brought to Sligo Gaol because they simply wanted to play football. Having to walk into the Garda Station in Ballindine, when the sergeant’s wife, learned of why these young men were going to jail took pity on the lads and made them a big fry of rashers and sausages and for some of them it was the first time they ever tasted a sausage, a rare treat before they travelled to spend Christmas in Gaol for playing football.
The seven young men from Killeenrevagh who when went to jail for playing football with Garrymore were Tony O’Toole, Sonny Commons, Joe Prendergast, Gabe Heaney and three brothers Sean, Tom and Paddy Prendergast. The group travelled in two groups with Gabe Heaney, Joe Prendergast and Tony O’Toole being brought first. Sonny Commons and the three Prendergast brothers Sean, Tom and Paddy were in the second journey to Sligo.
Paddy Prendergast was the last of the prisoners and the passing of Paddy has brought an end to an era in Garrymore football that should never be forgotten, when seven young men from the club went to Jail for playing football.

Garry suffer defeat in derby.
05/05/20120 Comments

Garrymore opened their league campaign with a five point defeat to neighbours Claremorris this evening. Garrymore controlled the first half and where unlucky not to be more than five points clear at half time. The second half was a different story, Claremorris were more economical with their position as Garrymore gave away a lot of ball. A Claremorris goal midway through the half rattled Garrymore and they never recovered. Claremorris went on to win the game by five points. For a match report. Check out Match reports.

Finally the first round of the Breaffy House division 1B will take place this weekend, a full month later than last year no less. The late start to the league will no doubt lead to a back log of fixtures later on in the year but that remains to be seen. While Garrymore Claremorris fixtures are always tight ones and very keenly contested Claremorris have won the last 3 league meetings between the sides in 2008, 2009, 2011. On the flip side Championship and the O’Mara cup have fared better for Garrymore. The last fixture between the sides in Garrymore last year Claremorris came away with the points after a second half collapse by Garrymore. Garrymore started very brightly and controlled the opening half but received a sucker punch just before half time which they failed to recover from. 2012 is a different year for both clubs, Garrymore are now under the new management of Jack Grimes, Pat Dixon and Fintan Corcoran remain unbeaten so far this season with two draws and a win in the O’Mara Cup and a victory over Breaffy in the Michael Walsh league. On the other side Claremorris with their new gaffer Martin McNamara reached the O’Mara cup final only to be beaten in a replay, they also have made it one out of one in the Michael Walsh league. On all the evidence so far looks like two teams are starting as they mean to go on. Like any derby game they are very hard to call and form at the best of times doesn’t come into it, Saturday evening will be no different with local bragging rights at stake. The game is due to throw in at 6.00 pm in Claremorris Saturday evening. For those people who cannot make the game there will be live updates available via Facebook, Twitter and Garrymoregaa.com/score-centre.

Rebels sink Mayo
29/04/20120 Comments

Cork retained the Division One league title with a 2-10 to 0-11 success against Mayo at Croke Park.
Second-half goals from Colm O’Neill and Aidan Walsh proved decisive as the Rebel County dominated after the restart, ‘winning’ the second period by 2-5 to 0-2, with Ray Carey producing a Man of the Match performance at corner back.
The result means that Conor Counihan has now overseen four successive league wins as Cork manager, including the Division Two title in 2009 and three successive Division One crowns.
Mayo looked very comfortable in the first half and six points from Young Footballer of the Year Cillian O’Connor propelled them into a 0-9 to 0-5 interval lead.
Cork had the wind in their faces as they kicked towards an empty Hill 16 during that opening period, with both teams lining out as selected earlier in the week. The first few chances of the match were missed, including a Conor Mortimer free that came back off a post.
There was just a point apiece in the opening ten minutes: a Pearse O’Neill point for the Rebels and a converted ninth-minute Cillian O’Connor free for the Connacht champions. Fintan Goold took a pass from Colm O’Neill and banged over the Leesiders’ second score after O’Connor had tagged on a second converted free.
With over 22,000 looking on, full forward O’Connor fired over his third free to restore the westerners’ advantage and it stood at 0-3 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. O’Connor’s fourth successful free was an excellent finish from over 50 metres but Goold responded almost instantly, only for corner back Keith Higgins to thump over an inspirational Mayo point.
On 24 minutes, O’Connor had a sniff of goal but his left-foot shot flew well over the bar. Within 40 seconds, centre back Donal Vaughan demonstrated power and accuracy to make it 0-7 to 0-3 to the underdogs after 25 minutes.
Donncha O’Connor effortlessly clipped over a Cork free from in front of the sticks and Mayo custodian David Clarke was breathing a sigh of relief when a long free from opposing captain Graham Canty bounced over him and just about cleared the bar for a freak point that could easily have been a freak goal.
On the stoke of 35 minutes, recently-named Mayo captain Andy Moran thumped over an exquisite point to make it a three-point game again. For some reason Cork wing back Noel O’Leary took exception to Vaughan staying on the ground after being tripped by O’Neill and colliding heavily with Eoin Cadogan – and tried to pull him off the deck, which caused a mini skirmish.
But Cillian O’Connor arrowed over the resultant free in the third added minute at the end of the first half to leave four between them at the short whistle.
Alan O’Connor, Paddy Kelly and Pearse O’Neill drilled over a trio of Cork points within as many minutes upon the resumption and Donncha O’Connor kicked the levelling point in the 44th minute. Mayo hadn’t got out of the blocks since the break…
In the 47th minute, Colm O’Neill almost burst the net with a blarger of a goal off his left foot. The No.13 collected a pass inside from Donncha O’Connor and wasted no time in unleashing a rocket which flew past Clarke, giving the exposed Mayo ‘keeper no chance.
Kevin McLoughlin floated over Mayo’s first score of the second half in the 50th minute but it was to no avail as the game was effectively over as a contest five minutes later when Goold’s shot came back into play off a post and full forward Walsh reacted quickest to slam the breaking ball through the despairing dive of a defender to the net: 2-9 to 0-10.
Mayo were feeling aggrieved as they were convinced they should have been awarded a free in front of the posts moments earlier when Lee Keegan appeared to have been impeded by Pearse O’Neill at the other end…
Tempers flared momentarily under the Hill when Moran stayed down after an O’Leary foul and Michael Shields decided to throw the ball at him. Both sets of players were guilty of some ridiculous Premier-League-like antics today and the tendency to over-exaggerate every little contact was embarrassingly evident at times.
Mortimer converted the free, anyway, and Cork substitute Daniel Goulding confirmed that he’ll be back for the championship when he notched the closing point.

Cork: Alan Quirke; Ray Carey, Michael Shields, Eoin Cadogan; Noel O’Leary, Graham Canty (0-1), Paudie Kissane; Pearse O’Neill (0-2), Alan O’Connor (0-1); Fintan Goold (0-2), Paddy Kelly (0-1), Paul Kerrigan; Colm O’Neill (1-0), Aidan Walsh (1-0), Donncha O’Connor (0-2). Subs: Daniel Goulding (0-1), Barry O’Driscoll.

Mayo: David Clarke; Kevin Keane , Ger Cafferkey, Keith Higgins (0-1); Lee Keegan, Donal Vaughan (0-1), Colm Boyle; Barry Moran, Jason Gibbons; Kevin McLoughlin (0-1), Andy Moran (0-1), Alan Dillon; Conor Mortimer, Cillian O’Connor (0-6), Michael Conroy. Michael Walsh Cup victory
22/04/20120 Comments

Garrymore Seniors had a excellent victory over Breaffy in the Michael Walsh league this evening. Garrymore played with the wind in the first half and led at half time by four points thanks to a Micheal Connolly goal after 20 minutes. It wasn’t however smooth sailing for Garrymore with the wind, Breaffy had the better of the opening exchanges and lead the game up until Connolly’s goal. Garrymore started the second half where they left of the first and dominated position and carried the ball well into the wind. Breaffy still were in touching distance of the visitors for the majority of the half despite not having the same amount of possession, that was untll a very well worked team goal finished by midfielder Anthony Cunningham with 15 minutes remaining. Garrymore pulled further away with a string of points while Breaffy had no response for the entire second half. The result takes Garrymore to top of their section thanks to a superior score difference over Westport who beat Kiltane by nine points this evening. Next up for Garrymore is Kiltane next Saturday evening in Garrymore. A full list of results and group tables can be found by clicking HERE

Mayo beat Kerry after extra time.
15/04/20120 Comments

Mayo scored a thrilling 2-15 to 1-17 victory over Kerry after extra time at Croke Park.
At the end of an absorbing contest, substitute Richie Feeney’s point sent the Connacht county through to the final after a wondergoal from Colm Boyle had handed James Horan’s charges a lifeline.
The sides were level after 70 minutes for the second time in eight days: 1-13 each, which meant there would be 20 additional minutes.
Cillian O’Connor’s late, late free ensured that this semi-final will go to extra time after the sides could not be separated during normal time in an exciting tussle.
Six Conor Mortimer points propelled the winners into a 0-9 to 0-7 interval advantage. Mayo were good value for their lead, bossing much of the opening half.
Barry Moran came into the Mayo starting team at midfield in place of Aidan O’Shea, while Jack O’Connor replaced Declan O’Sullivan with Kieran O’Leary. The Connacht champions started best and they had three points on the board inside six minutes, courtesy of Mortimer (2) and corner back Keith Higgins, who popped one over at the end of a surging run.
Bryan Sheehan stroked over a Kerry free after a foul on Patrick Curtin before Mortimer latched onto an excellent Michael Conroy pass to extend the westerners’ advantage. On ten minutes, Mayo’s all-time leading scorer slotted over his fourth point of the match to make it 0-5 to 0-1.
Three minutes later, Alan Dillon effortlessly shrugged off a couple of Kerry men to put five points between the teams. Colm Cooper replied with an excellent point off his left foot and Kerry were unfortunate when Paul Galvin’s shot came back off a post following a quick Cooper free. Mayo pair Kevin McLoughlin and Colm Boyle both went into the referee’s notebook inside the first quarter for late tackles.
Curtin and O’Leary drilled over a couple of nice Kerry points and Anthony Maher had the gap down to the minimum with 15 minutes left in the first half. Mortimer and Cooper traded frees and Andy Moran hit the first wide of the game in the 24th minute.
Sheehan struck an excellent levelling point off his left foot after a superb run but Darran O’Sullivan dropped an effort into David Clarke’s arms before Moran drilled a fierce shot a foot over the Kerry crossbar: 0-8 to 0-7.
Mortimer doubled the gap with his sixth point and the half-time whistle sounded with two points separating the sides.
Dillon dropped over his second point within 20 seconds of the resumption and Cooper (free) responded after the most innocuous of fouls on Galvin by Lee Keegan, for which the Mayo wing back rather bizarrely received a yellow card. Andy Moran ran out of space as he tried to get through for a Mayo goal and Clarke made a tidy save to deny O’Sullivan at the Hill 16 end.
Sheehan (free) tied the scores up again in the 47th minute and O’Sullivan collected a pass from Kieran Donaghy to put the Munster champions in front for the first time; Cooper’s free made it 0-12 to 0-10 at the end of the third quarter following a foul on the Kerry centre forward.
On 53 minutes, substitute James O’Donoghue reacted quickest to the breaking ball and slotted a left-footed shot first time to the Mayo net, putting daylight between the sides. Mayo had been outscored by 1-5 to 0-1 in the first 18 minutes of the second half.
Boyle got forward go bang over a Mayo point and another Mortimer free closed the gap to three with twelve minutes remaining, 1-12 to 0-12, but Sheehan arrowed over an excellent free from off the ground eight minutes from time.
Mayo were denied an obvious free in front of the posts when Galvin knocked McLoughlin over as he bore down on goal but Mayo they were awarded a penalty three minutes from the end when Galvin was adjudged to have felled Dillon as the No.12 headed for goal after collecting a mis-hit backpass from Kieran Donaghy.
Substitute Pat Harte calmly dispatched his shot to the bottom right corner of the net to leave the minimum between the sides with two minutes to go.
Two minutes of injury time were announced and Mayo won a free in the fourth of these (!), for a foul on substitute O’Connor, who knocked his kick between the posts in the 75th minute – 1-13 each at the end of normal time.
Sheehan had Kerry back in front from a free shortly after the action resumed and O’Connor dropped a free short into Brendan Kealy’s arms before Sheehan added another free, 1-15 to 1-13.
O’Connor gave Shane Enright the slip to tap over a lovely point from play but fellow substitute Barry John Keane cancelled that score out to leave two between the teams at the end of the first period of added time.
Keane tagged on a 17th Kerry point in the 84th minute but, incredibly, Mayo drew level immediately when wing back Boyle pulled a real rabbit from the hat as he fired a brilliant left-footed shot to the corner of the net after the opportunity appeared to have passed him by: 2-14 to 1-17.
Substitute Richie Feeney demonstrated remarkable strength and composure to slot over the clinching point in the final minute of additional time. Kerry were awarded a ’45’ a minute into injury time at the end of extra time and Sheehan took responsibility, but his kick curled to the left and wide.
This means Garrymore’s the first league game against Claremorris will now be pushed off till May 6th. Next Saturday Garrymore will compete in the Michael Walsh league against Breaffy. The weekend after 28/29 of April we will take on Kiltane at home in the second round of the Michael Walsh league.

Mighty Mayo run riot.
31/03/20120 Comments

Brilliant Mayo careered to a stunning 0-20 to 0-8 victory over 13-man Dublin at Castlebar.
The sides were back in McHale Park for this rematch after the original fixture had been abandoned at half time due to fog, with the westerners in complete control at the time and Dublin down to 14 men. Tonight, it got even better for Mayo and much, much worse for the reigning Leinster and All-Ireland champions, who had both Paul Flynn and Diarmuid Connolly dismissed in the second half.
As well as the two reds, Dublin also collected seven yellows on their journey west. Their manager will not be happy with either the performance or the lack of discipline shown. His team lacked hunger and seemed to display real signs of complacency. But credit Mayo, who were excellent.
This rousing victory propels them into third place on the Division One table, level on six points with Down and Dublin but well ahead of both on points difference after notching +12 in this display.
The effect the red cards had on the outcome was minimal as the winners were in control of this match from the off and established an eleven-point cushion while the sides were still operating at fifteen men apiece.
The large number of home supporters amongst the official attendance of 10,153 (all of whom were admitted free of charge) certainly enjoyed their night’s entertainment. We will resist the urge to say they got value for money!
Man of the Match Conor Mortimer enjoyed his night, too, registering eight points as he became his county’s all-time leading scorer.
Mayo produced a rousing first-half display to take a massive 0-13 to 0-5 advantage into the break, with Conor Mortimer, Michael Conroy and Alan Dillon running the Dubs defence ragged.
There was a poignant moment before throw-in as a minute’s silence was observed for the late Dublin-born Australian Rules legend Jim Stynes. When the action commenced, it was the hosts who registered the first point courtesy of Conroy.
Mortimer missed a chance to double the gap but James Horan’s men continued to attack and that man Conroy was on hand to turn his man and slot over their second point in the seventh minute – an excellent score. A minute later, Bryan Cullen opened the All-Ireland champions’ account with a lovely finish.
The Connacht champions continued to dominate and Alan Dillon, Mortimer (free) and Dillon again pointed inside three minutes to make it 0-5 to 0-1 after twelve minutes. Diarmuid Connolly and Donal Vaughan each picked up a yellow card and Mayo got three of the next five points before Dillon made it 0-9 to 0-3 after 25 minutes – not many would have predicted that!
Paddy Andrews and Cullen had pointed for the visitors, while Mortimer had added a brace to his record-breaking tally – in the process he became Mayo’s top scorer of all time. David Clarke made a good save to deny Kevin Nolan a much-needed Dublin goal and Ger Brennan also went into the referee’s book before Conroy added another.
The impressive Conroy / Mortimer double act combined again for the latter to knock over Mayo’s eleventh point on the half-hour and there were further scores from Barry Moran and Mortimer – who could have gone for goal – as the gap went up to an amazing ten points, 0-13 to 0-3.
Mossie Quinn popped over a couple of late frees, with Clarke making another vital intervention in between, but Mayo remained very much in control at the short whistle, leading by eight points.
Upon the resumption, rampant Mayo continued where they had left off with quickfire points from Mortimer and Vaughan (2) and it went from bad to worse for Pat Gilroy’s completely out-of-sorts team as substitute Paul Flynn received a straight red card for elbowing an opponent.
Brennan pulled back a point for the visitors but they were still ten points adrift and down a man. But Connolly (free) added another: 0-16 to 0-7.
Any hopes of a miraculous Dublin revival were snuffed out instantly as Mayo knocked over two more points in as many minutes, with Mortimer and Dillon hitting the target to re-establish an eleven-point gap.
Keith Higgins and Connolly had a wide at either end before Conroy pointed and Pat Gilroy’s woes multiplied as his team was reduced to 13 men with Connolly collecting his second yellow card.
Mortimer took his eighth point and both Conroy and Dillon wasted goal changes as the winners cantered to the finishing line.
Substitute Dean Rock got the last score of the day for a very disappointing Dublin side. This result will cause plenty of debate amongst GAA followers nationwide. What happened to Dublin tonight? And what happened to Mayo?!

Past weekend games
27/03/20120 Comments

Over the weekend Garrymore played two games in their preparation for the league in mid April. Saturday evening they travelled to Tuam to take on Tuam Stars in a challenge game. Garrymore still missing regulars, put up a great game to Tuam Stars who in turn had a fairly strong side out. Garrymore lead for long periods of the game and it wasn’t till the 50th minute Garrymore surrendered the lead and couldn’t retain it. Tuam ran out one point winners 12 points to 11.

Sunday morning Garrymore played Kilmane in the re-arrange O’Mara Cup game from round 1. The game didn’t mean anything to either side as they were both out of the running for the O’Mara Cup. Garrymore played a lot of fringe players in their preparation for the first round of division 1f next Sunday. The game was played in perfect conditions Sunday morning but it was the away side that had the better of the opening exchanges and lead at half time. Only for two Garrymore penalties we could have found ourselves further behind, but to Garrymore’s credit and a notable trait so far this year they haven’t given up until the final whistle and were rewarded with a share of the spoils with a late score.

Strong finish sees Rebels past Mayo
26/03/20120 Comments

Cork enjoyed a 0-14 to 0-13 victory over Mayo in Castlebar.

The Rebels were second-favourites after having centre forward Mark Collins sent off in the first half and Mayo led by five points shortly after half time.

But Cork hung in there and late scores from substitute Paul Kerrigan and Donncha O’Connor nicked the points, after Alan Dillon was also sent off late on.

Mayo had wind assistance in the first half and controlled the last ten minutes before the interval to lead by 0-7 to 0-3.

Alan Freeman opened the scoring with a point from play for the hosts after four minutes. Each side made one enforced change before throw-in, both at the back: Sean Kiely came into the Rebels XV for Graham Canty and Colm Boyle was replaced by Kevin Keane on James Horan’s team.

There was a lengthy delay while Keith Higgins received treatment and Donncha O’Connor levelled the scores before Colm O’Neill popped Cork in front for the first time. Scores were hard to come by even though this match was being played in resplendent conditions, at close to championship intensity.

Centre back Donal Vaughan kicked a great point to make it two apiece at the start of the second quarter and an excellent Michael Conroy point made it 0-3 to 0-2 in favour of the Connacht champions.

Alan Dillon, Conroy and substitute Conor Mortimer were all on target as the hosts moved 0-6 to 0-3 ahead and the Leesiders suffered a major blow when centre forward Mark Collins was sent off before the break.

Andy Moran (2) and Mortimer (2) were the scorers as the home side assumed a double-scores advantage, 0-10 to 0-5, O’Connor pointing a 39th-minute free and Kiely also on target for the Rebels.

O’Connor pointed from play and Kerrigan and Moran traded overs before Barry O’Driscoll and Paddy Kelly sparked a Cork revival with eight minutes left, 0-12 to 0-10.

Jason Doherty picked a good moment to pop up with his first point of the afternoon but Alan Dillon was dismissed with a second yellow card and Cork closed within a point thanks to Aidan Walsh.

Substitute Paul Kerrigan levelled it up in the 70th minute and O’Connor hit the clincher in injury time after Paudie Kissane struck an upright.

Cork – A Quirke; R Carey, M Shields, E Cotte; S Kiely (0-1), N O’Leary, A Walsh (0-1), P Kissane; P O’Neill, A O’Connor; F Goold, M Collins, P Kelly (0-2); C O’Neill (0-1), D O’Connor (0-6). Subs – P Kerrigan (0-2) for O’Neill, B O’Driscoll (0-1) for Goold.

14-man Donegal blitz Mayo in second half
19/03/20120 Comments

Donegal made light of Rory Kavanagh’s dismissal just before half-time to overcome Mayo in Ballyshannon.

Donegal 0-17
Mayo 1-7

The signs looked ominous for the home side when they trailed by 0-6 to 1-5 at the break and a man down after midfielder Kavanagh was sent off by referee Marty Duffy for a dangerous tackle on Kevin McLaughlin. But, in an amazing turnaround, they outscored the Connacht champions by 0-11 to 0-2 in the second half to collect their second win of the campaign and drag Mayo into the relegation dogfight in the process.

Colm McFadden and Michael Murphy led the comeback with 0-7 and 0-5 respectively, while Karl Lacey, Patrick McBrearty and Leo McLoone also got in on the scoring act. Mayo’s misery was compounded by the dismissal of their full back Ger Cafferky on a second yellow card eight minutes from the end.

With Aidan O’Shea suspended, his brother Seamus took his place in the Mayo midfield and they were quickly into their stride with Conor Mortimer’s 10th minute goal helping them to a commanding 1-3 to 0-1 lead after 25 minutes. With McFadden in fine form from placed balls, Donegal rallied to trail by two at the break, but still looked to have it all to do after Kavanagh saw red.

But against all the odds, they took over completely in the second period. By contrast, the scores dried up for Mayo, with only one of their outfield players managing to raise a flag after the restart – goalkeeper Robbie Hennelly was their other scorer from a free.

Mayo U-21’s edge past Galway.
15/03/20120 Comments

In McHale Park in the Connacht championship, Conor O’Shea’s goal put the home side into an early 1-2 to 0-1 lead over Galway, but the Tribesmen dominated the remainder of the half. They rattled off the next six points to take a two point advantage and led by 0-8 to 1-3 at the break.

Niall Walsh and Stephen O’Brien extended the Galway lead on the resumption but with Darren Coen and Cillian O’Connor impressive, Mayo started to eat into the lead. O’Connor put Mayo 1-10 to 0-12 up with minutes remaining before Galway sent the game to extra time via a late Austin O’Toole score.

O’Connor landed the only point of the first ten minute period of extra time. O Griofa levelled for Galway on the resumption before the sides swapped points again. Mayo looked the stronger team at this stage and two frees from O’Connor placed Ray Dempsey’s side 1-14 to 0-15 ahead as the final whistle blew.

Garrymore v Davitts Preview
14/03/20120 Comments

Garrymore welcome County Intermediate Champions Davitts to Garrymore on Sunday morning. Davitts the reigning O’Mara Cup Champions are out of the running to regain their title after two defeats from their opening three games. Garrymore on the other hand still have a slight chance of progressing to the O’Mara cup final, they will need to win their remaining two games against Davitts and Kilmaine while hoping Hollymount/Carramore will slip up against bottom placed Kilmaine this weekend.

Both sides are no strangers to each other as they have met a lot in recent years between O’Mara Cup and the league. Games between the sides have been very close with never more that a score between the sides in the last 5 meetings with the exception of last year’s league game.

Davitts on the back of their All Ireland appearance last month have rested a number of players for the pre-season competition but have also lost players to immigration and Colm Boyle and Michael Conroy to the Mayo Senior setup for the O’Mara Cup. With that, the two games they lost they were very unlucky not to come away with at least a point and with another derby on Sunday no doubt it will go down to the wire.

Jack Grimes will be hoping to get his first victory of the year on Sunday after two draws away to Ballinrobe and Hollymount/Carramore. Of Course this competition is what Jack will be using as a stepping stone for the league in a month’s time and will be looking to finish it on a winning note in.

Garrymore Davitts games traditionally attract big crowd and with the Bank Holiday this weekend it promises to be tense and thrilling affair.

Down stun 14 man Mayo
11/03/20120 Comments

The Connacht champions never recovered from the ninth-minute dismissal of Aidan O’Shea, who was issued with a straight red card following a challenge on Danny Hughes. Soundly beaten by Cork and Kerry in their last two outings, James McCartan’s side went on to lead by four points at half-time thanks to a Conor McGinn goal and they maintained their advantage in the second half to join Mayo on four points in Division 1.
Andy Moran raised the first white flag after just 12 seconds, only for Aidan Carr to reply for the visitors. Disaster then struck for the home side when midfielder O’Shea was given his marching orders, but they responded with the lead point from Conor Mortimer.
The 14 men kept their noses in front until the 20th minute when Conor McGinn fisted a high ball past the advancing Robert Hennelly to edge Down into a 1-2 to 0-4 lead. Mortimer replied with a brace for Mayo, but points from Carr (free), McGinn and Ambrose Rogers helped Down to a 1-7 to 0-6 interval lead.
The hosts had wind advantage in the second half, but they fell further in arrears when Carr pointed within 25 seconds of the restart. Mortimer and Alan Dillon hit back, only for Danny Hughes to notch up Down’s ninth point. Mortimer made it 0-9 to 1-9 before the same player and Alan Freeman reduced the deficit to the minimum.
But James Horan’s charges couldn’t get any closer as further points from Carr and Hughes eased Down clear.

2012 league fixtures
08/03/20120 Comments

The 2012 league fixtures have officially been released via the Mayo GAA website and not the Kilkenny GAA website. Garrymore will have two teams involved in the league this year division in 1B and division 1F. Division 1F is due to start on the 1/4/12 against Ballyhaunis B two weeks earlier than 1B due to Mayo’s involvement in the league. For the senior lads they will take on near neighbours Claremorris in the opening round of the league on the 15th of April. Note that this game could be postponed if Mayo were to get to a league semi final which is pencilled in for that weekend. Elsewhere Garrymore’s start to the league this year wont an easy one with trips into Claremorris, Bangor and Kiltimagh and later on Newport. With the restructuring of the league there will be 11 games of which we have six at home and five away. For a full list of fixtures check out Senior league or Junior league.

Mayo clip Armaghs wings
03/03/20120 Comments

Mayo brought Armagh back to earth: 1-14 to 0-11 at the Athletic Grounds.
It was all Mayo in the first half and they deservedly led by four points at the short whistle, 1-7 to 0-6.
Alan Freeman fired over the first three points for the victors and Andy Moran followed up with an eighth-minute goal to make it 1-3 to no score.
Enda Varley was on hand to stretch the gap further and the Orchard County looked rattled by the visitors’ rip-roaring start. Armagh replied with a pointed free from their stand-out performer, Aidan Forker.
The home side landed three of the next four points – via Brian Mallon, Gavin McParland and Forker – to leave the goal between them, 1-4 to 0-4, before Freeman made it double scores with another converted free.
The Connacht champions were causing the Ulster men all kinds of problems and they knocked over another couple of frees from Conor Mortimer and Freeman to lead by six, 1-7 to 0-4.
Forker brought his tally to four but the visitors still took a useful 1-7 to 0-6 lead into the break.
Mortimer fired the first score of the second half from a free and he was on target again before Varley made it 1-10 to 0-6.
Lee Keegan made it an eight-point game and a Forker free eventually opened the Orchard County’s second-half account.
Armagh kept going strongly and they hit four more successive points to close within four, but they needed a goal…
However, it was Mayo who finished strongest and Varley’s point provided the icing on the cake.

Ballinrobe Preview
28/02/20120 Comments

Garrymore take on Ballnrobe in the third round of the O’Mara Cup this Sunday. It’s a must win game for Ballinrobe to stay in contention for the O’Mara cup after their round one defeat to Hollymmount/Carramore. Ballinrobe bounced back in week two with a excellent victory over reigning champions Davitts in Ballindine to keep their chances of getting back the cup they won in 2010. Garrymore and Ballinrobe have met a lot in this competition in recent years with Ballinrobe having the slight edge beating Garrymore on the last two occasions. Garrymore go into this game on the back of a draw against Hollymount/Carramore last week and will be looking to get the first win of the season in Flanagan Park on Sunday. The game is due to throw in at 12 noon with Mike Connelly officiating.

Note the draw for the Junior B Championship will take place in a couple of weeks when the clubs involved confirm their participation.

League fixtures have also being delayed due to Mayo’s re-match with Dublin. One thing is sure that the original date for the start of the league April 1st now will not be.

For the Garrymore Juniors who play in division 1F this year, the first round of the league will still remain on the 14/4/12. For a list of who we will play check out the Junior league.

Garry v Holly/Carra Preview
22/02/20120 Comments

Garrymore will take on newly formed club Hollymount/Carramore this Sunday morning in the O’Mara cup. This will be Garrymore’s first game of the competition after the game against Kilmaine did not go ahead last weekend.

The two teams met last year in the league in which Garrymore came out on top after a strong finish to take the two points on offer in the league. Hollymount/Carramore have the slight advantage going into the fixture with a game under their belt. They put up an impressive score against Ballinrobe in Ballinrobe last weekend, this was on the back of the run they had in the championship last season. They ran intermediate finalists to a replay, loosing narrowly in the decider.

Garrymore and Hollymount games in the past have always been tense affairs and gathered big crowds, Sunday will be no different with the new club.
Like any season it is always important to start on a winning note and no doubt on Sunday, Garrymore will be looking to get one over on neighbours Hollymount/Carramore.

Match Preview
16/02/20120 Comments

The first round of the O’Mara Cup starts this weekend were Garrymore will welcome near neighbours Kilmaine to Garrymore on Sunday. Garrymore under the new management of Jack Grimes will be looking to put a stop to the drought Garry’ have had in the O’Mara Cup, not winning it since the 90’s. Garrymore have welcomed a few new faces to the panel this season and with lads out injured and involved with county scene we may well see their welcomed return to the pitch Sunday.

Kilmaine will prove to be very sticky opposition for Garrymore on Sunday. They have made great strides in the league and championship in recent years. Missing out on promotion by one place last year and narrowly losing out to Davitts(who went on to win it) in the Intermediate championship ¼ final.

Going on recent results between Garrymore and Kilmaine there is very little between the sides in the finish and there is no reason to why this will be any different Sunday.

The game will not be live on score centre but other games in the O’Mara Cup and competitions later on in the season will be. Keep an eye out on garrymoregaa.com twitter and facebook for details to when this will be.

Mayo/Dublin game abandoned
14/02/20120 Comments

The meeting of Mayo and Dublin was abandoned at half time due to fog in Castlebar. As a dense blanket of fog descended upon McHale Park, reducing visibility to practically zero, match referee Marty Duffy had no option but to call the match off. It was disappointing for those in attendance as the contest was delicately-poised after 35 minutes, with the 14-man Dubs ahead by three.Dublin led by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break but would have been home and hosed but for the dismissal of wing back James McCarthy after 25 minutes. They were ahead by 0-8 to 0-3 at that stage and had struck eight of the previous nine scores, with Diarmuid Connolly rampant.A massive crowd turned out at McHale Park for this Saturday night match under lights and there was a late change to the home side as Ballintubber clubman Jason Gibbons came in at midfield in place of Seamus O’Shea. It was Gibbons’ clubmate Cillian O’Connor who opened the scoring, the 2011 Young Footballer of the Year clipping over a free following a Philly McMahon foul. Onlooking Taoiseach Enda Kenny could afford a smile as the Connacht champions stretched their advantage from another free, this one from a more central position, off the boot of Conor Mortimer from 30 metres: 0-2 to no score after five minutes. However, the All-Ireland champions quickly settled and hit the front with a run of five points in ten minutes. Diarmuid Connolly was instrumental in the recovery as he showed well to boot over two quick scores to draw the visitors level before coming close to firing a goal. After Mossie Quinn nonchalantly stroked over a trademark free, Connolly picked out Paul Brogan to give Pat Gilroy’s men a two-point lead. And who else but the elusive Connolly was on hand to gather possession in front of his man and make it 0-5 to 0-2?The St Vincent’s clubman was running riot and James Horan would have to act quickly to stop him before this game ran away from Mayo. Connolly was producing the sort of form that put Tyrone to the sword at Croke Park last summer. The gap rose to five points when Quinn tapped over another free and Kevin McManamon lost his marker to slot a seventh successive score for the away team and make it 0-7 to 0-2. Dublin’s early-morning rises were clearly doing them no harm whatsoever! It was an exhibition from the Sam Maguire holders in the first quarter as Mayo couldn’t get near them such was the slickness and ease of their movement.Enda Varley roused the home support with a fine score, reacting quickest after O’Connor struck the woodwork, but Stephen Cluxton thumped over a free to restore the five-point cushion.Mayo needed something to happen for them if they were going to gain any kind of foothold in this game and they were handed a lifeline of sorts when Dublin were reduced to 14 men before the break, wing back James McCarthy picking up a straight red card after his elbow connected with Alan Freeman. The numerical advantage tipped the tide back in Mayo’s favour and they came close to a goal when Varley’s shot struck the crossbar and went over. A Mortimer free had the margin down to three at the short whistle, 0-8 to 0-5.Conditions had deteriorated in the closing ten minutes of the first half and, during the half-time break, the thick fog started to descend with intent over the Castlebar venue. Referee Marty Duffy decided to provisionally extend the interval by five minutes to see would conditions improve…After a long wait, the match official had no real alternative but to call the game off, which left three pertinent questions needing to be answered:Would James McCarthy’s red card stand? (answers on the back of a postcard, please)When would the replay take place? (The CCCC will meet on Monday to decide)Would the spectators be able to make their way to the pub in the fog to watch the rugby? (didn’t matter: France V Ireland was called off too due to a frozen pitch in Paris)

New Senior Manager….posted Jan 9, 2012 12:15 PM by Trevor Nally

Garrymore recently ratified John Grimes as the new senior team manager for the 2012 season. John who takes the reins over from John Nally who mentored the team for the past two years ,will have the job of guiding the team through the upcoming season. John better known as Jack, has a long and established career in the rugby circles managing Ballinrobe, Westport and Connacht Juniors. In 2006 Jack joined Tourmakeady’s backroom team as trainer and won the Mayo Intermediate championship as well as the Connacht Intermediate championship that year. In 2008 Jack took over as manager, reaching the Intermediate final in 2009 and then winning it in 2010 beating a much fancied Burrishoole side on that day. Last year Jack defied all odds in beating Charlestown in a relegation decider where Tourmakeady retained their senior status. Garrymore now in its 42nd year of Senior championship football will have jack as mentor for the 2012 season. Jack will announce his backroom team in the next couple of weeks ahead of the new season.
